The Smart Staircase

Another in my photographic study of staircases. This one? The stairs leading to Jonathan Smart Gallery in High Street. White, pristine and filled with promise and possibilities. I had the urge to take to them with cans of multi-coloured spray paint. I stood there for sometime imagining the pale stair covers converted into a zebra stripe of hot, wild shades...... and even better, imagining Jonathan's face when he unlocked the bottom door and saw my handiwork.

Stairway to Heaven

Christchurch. Jan. 2009. Ajr Remembering blue skied days in Christchurch in the middle of a stone-grey winter! Anyone following this blog won't be surprised to see me featuring another staircase. I'm only slightly fixated by staircases, stairwells and such; and I particularly love the shadows they cast and their relationship to surrounding architecture.

I was so taken with this staircase, and so keen to check out the right angle for a photograph, that I failed to watch my footing and fell flat on my face in the street! Thankfully, it was down a back lane in SOL (South of Lichfield) and the only people who witnessed my humiliation were a cafe worker hanging about having a sly fag and a young Chinese couple, who ran to my aid and helped me up - ego bruised, ankle twisted but otherwise no worse for the wear. Turns out taking photographs can be a hazardous business. www.sol.co.nz

There's something about a well lit staircase that really appeals to my aesthetic sensibilities. I spotted this one - flushed green - in central Christchurch a few days ago.

Every time I start thinking I've seen everything in Christchurch, I discover some other visual treat - in this case an elegant inner city staircase that I would have walked right past had I not looked to the left.
