I wonder what fascinates us so much about volcanoes. An even better question – WHY do we want to walk right to the edge of active craters? I’m all for it myself. I love volcanic landscapes – all that colour and all that hissing, steaming, bubbling action – not to mention the adrenalin, as fear and excitement mix. An outing with White Island Tours with PeeJay delivers it all. You head out on their luxury launch – dwarfed somewhat by the size of the island – and spend six hours tippy-toeing your way through sulphur mounds and rocky pathways to better understand what makes the island so ‘bad-tempered.’ www.whiteisland.co.nz
