Greymouth Architecture

Greymouth, West Coast. Nov. 2008. Ajr
Like many people, I have been known to make jokes about Greymouth - mostly to the effect that it is aptly named; but when I visited in November last year, the sun was streaming down and this usually-dull little town took me quite by surprise. I roamed the streets with a friend, taking photographs and we came away with all sorts of gems. I particularly liked the solid green bulk of this old Art Deco building, which now serves as a popular cafe.

Visible History

Greymouth. Dec. 2008. Ajr
On a recent brief visit to Greymouth I was so taken aback by the fine weather and bright blue skies, I went slightly beserk with my little camera. It's never been my favourite place on earth but on this particular day I decided there was more of merit than I realised. I particularly liked this 'illustrated wall' at the rear of the Greymouth Evening Star building - a little potted provincial history; as quirky and idiosynchratic as much of small town New Zealand is. www.greydistrict.co.nz

Taking it Easy on the West Coast

Greymouth, West Coast. Dec. 2008. Ajr
If you ever find yourself in Greymouth on the South Island's West Coast in need of a decent cup of coffee, this is the place to head for - dpOne Cafe. It's one of those relaxed, slightly dishevelled places - at least in terms of decor - that ooze character and local colour.

One Green Dress.......

Greymouth. Dec. 2008. Ajr
This bright green dress is no high-fashion number but it 'glowed' like a beacon in the window of this old brick Greymouth building and attracted me across the street.

Another Sunday Offering.....

Greymouth, West Coast. Dec. 2008. Ajr
The sun was shining in Greymouth on Wednesday - surprise surprise! And I was delighted to get this bright shot down an otherwise characterless backstreet.
