In the Pink

TheNewDowse, Lower Hutt. April 2009. Ajr
Here's another of the very excellent signs at TheNewDowse in Lower Hutt. I liked many of their signs almost as much as some of the gallery exhibits. You can see others by clicking on TheNewDowse in the label line below this post. www.newdowse.org.nz

The Dilemma of Choice

Milton, South Otago. Feb 2009 Ajr
Faced with choices like this
Who could ever say life was dull and boring in Milton?
I especially like the bottom sign - I wonder if that's where Fairfax buries its journalists (alive) ?

Multiple Choice

Lyttelton. Sept. 2008. Ajr
You can always rely on the mad little port town of Lyttelton - just over the hills from Christchurch - to deliver something quirky and interesting. It's a photographer's paradise and even today, with a howling southerly blowing the streets inside out, there was time to stand here and consider my options. The Lyttelton Museum would have won but for the fact it was closed.

Signs of Art

'Signs' Maider Lopez. Christchurch Art Gallery. Sept.2008. Ajr
Spanish Artist Maider Lopez has gone through Christchurch Art Gallery highlighting some of the buildings more functional aspects - all in the name of art and SCAPE 2008. All those little boxes and switches and buttons on the grey walls that you may never have noticed before, have suddenly taken on a much more interesting 'persona' - which all serves to highlight the fact that most of us sail through the average day missing an enormous amount of visual detail.

Mosgiel Versus Hollywood

Mosgiel, Dunedin. August 2008. Ajr
I know it's a grand leap
But when I saw this sign on a hillside
just outside the little southern township of Mosgiel
I thought of Hollywood.

Obeying the Rules

The Bear Facts

This photograph was sent to me yesterday by a friend in Chicago - the fabulously talented artist/printmaker, David Jansheski. We don’t know its source – it’s just one of those funny things that circulates the world at the speed of light via email – but it amused me so much I feel bound to share it. We don’t have bears in New Zealand so I’m quite intrigued by the notion of a giant bear wandering into my garden…… not to mention the idea of going through the motions (pardon me) of inspecting its faeces

It's a Sign

Near Levin, North Island. 2007. Ajr
This would have to be one of the most photographed compositions in the country.
I've seen numerous images of this very same truck&sign taken by other people.

It's A Sign

Road Signs - the kangaroo and the wombat obviously Australian; the kiwi and the golf cart, New Zealand. And of course the obligatory NZ 'Beware of the Sheep' sign - they are such terrifying creatures after all. You can't be too careful!
