This is the very cute Jack's Hut, tucked into beech forest on the side of the main highway at Arthur's Pass. You'll pass it if you drive the three hour journey across the South Island, from Christchurch to Greymouth. It's now a registered Historic Site in the care of the Department of Conservation. I'm not sure of its original purpose - perhaps it was an early roadman's hut?

Yes, it was originally a roadman's cottage, but not in its current location. See the book of the same name by Grace Adams for the full history of the hut or the DOC website for a shorter one http://www.doc.govt.nz/conservation/historic/by-region/canterbury/waimakariri/jacks-hut/. (Glad to see the Bealey Moa entry has been updated, but the caption still says Jacksons.)
Thanks for all the eagle-eyed fact checking 'Anonymous'......I blame all that walking for my errors.....it made me dizzy and inattentive :-)
