For Furniture Fans.

'Ply-ability' is the first exhibition in New Zealand devoted to the fascinating story of innovation and change in New Zealand plywood studio furniture. I was sent these gorgeous images from the show, which is showing at Hawke's Bay Museum and Art Gallery until June 27.
The exhibition is a celebration of the extraordinary talents and innovation of one of New Zealand's most important furniture designers, Garnet Campbell (Garth) Chester [1916-1968], who was a self-taught designer who worked from the 1940s through to his retirement in 1964. He is recognised for his innovative bent-plywood furniture designs from the mid-late 1940s and for his steel-framed designs from the 1950s.
Ply-ability also recognises the work by other New Zealad designers working with plywood. It includes rare examples of local Modernist furniture, experimental works by amateur designers and designs by some of our leading contemporary furniture designers - like David Trubridge, Humphrey Ikin, a number of architects (John Scott, Michael Payne and Allan Wild) and many more. www.hbmag.co.nz

Lighting the Way

I loved this composition in a High Street Window - a very pleasing retail still life complete with Trubridge-designed light shade on the far left. Bright Lights

Christchurch. September 2009 Ajr
Internationally acclaimed New Zealand designer, David Trubridge needs no introduction - certainly not on this blog! I have after all, featured his immensely popular lighting design 'Coral/Floral' (and a close 'cousin') more often than is probably decent, in all manner of locations. This is one I snapped when I was out and about walking around the city about ten days ago - the en masse department store approach. www.davidtrubridge.com

The Return of the Light

Auckland. April 2009. Ajr "Coral/Floral" by internationally regarded New Zealand designer, David Trubridge makes yet another appearance in Blogsville! My favourite light fitting - from a photographic point of view at least. I love it for the glorious shadows it casts. I Can See Clearly

Auckland. April 2009. Ajr And here we are, back with the 'most photographed lighting design in New Zealand' - or so it feels to me. I can't walk past David Trubridge's 'Coral/Floral.' It's become something of a photographic habit. I spied this threesome in lower Queen Street in Auckland - in a 'glass cube of a cafe.' I loved that whole see-through aspect. I meant to go back at night and see if it was open but ran out of time. The Trubridge Returns

Auckland. April 2009. Ajr Anyone following this blog will be familiar with my rather odd obsession with David Trubridge's lighting designs, especially 'Coral/Floral' and this one ('a similar sister') above, photographed in an Auckland design store recently. While the light itself is nice enough (I'm almost over it), it's the reflections and shadows it casts that interest me more. That's not quite so evident in this shot. Here it was more a case of lovely forms and colours clustered together to make a pleasing chance composition. Seeing the Light - Again!

High Street, Auckland April 2009 Ajr
I wonder if there has been another lightshade - in recent times - that has soared to the impossibly dizzy heights of popularity afforded 'Coral/Floral' designed by Napier-based New Zealand designer David Trubridge? I don't have one in my house - but I do have dozens of photographs of it in numerous different settings. I quite like that - seeing how it looks in different locations, hung in different ways. You can see my other images of it (and it's close relative) by clicking on 'David Trubridge' in the label line below this post. www.davidtrubridge.com

In the Black

"Coral/Floral" by David Trubridge. Napier 2008. Ajr
Just by way of a change, let me introduce David Trubridge's wildly popular lighting design, "Coral/Floral" in black. I photographed this last year in David's hometown, Napier. You don't often see it in black so of course I HAD to snap it. For others in this series click on David Trubridge in the label line below. www.davidtrubridge.com
