Southern Heritage

Queenstown. May 2009. Ajr
I couldn't decide which of these two photographs I liked the best so I thought 'what the heck, let's run with them both.' I think I've made a wise decision for there's something very satisfying about seeing twin images of the lovely Heritage Queenstown with its snow-covered mountain backdrop. It was freezing in Queenstown when I stayed in the Heritage's swanky apartments; but I wasn't complaining - not with views like this over Lake Wakatipu. The Heritage, it must be said, is 'everybody's favourite hotel.' I haven't met a single person yet who has not loved staying there. I put it down to exceptionally friendly staff, an intimate lodge-like scale and great deals. The views too, of course. www.heritagehotels.co.nz

And since we're down in Queenstown, overlooking Lake Wakatipu, take a look at these terrific shots of the TSS Earnslaw as she chugs out of the bay and across to Walter Peak on the other side of the lake (top) and then sets off for the return voyage to Queenstown, leaving Walter Peak Station behind (bottom image). This is a cruise she makes hundreds of times a year. www.realjourneys.co.nz

Remarkable Views

Imagine waking up to views like this –Lake Wakatipu and the snow-clad Remarkables Range. You can if you choose to inhabit Matakauri Lodge’s new Grand Villa. Its elevated perch high above the lake presents an ever-changing outlook that will take your breath away. Best of all, you’re nestled among native bush far away from public roads. It’s all about total peace, total seclusion and total luxury. www.matakauri.co.nz
