So here's the latest - taken in one of favourite small Victoria towns, Kyneton, which sits about 1 hr and 15 minutes north of Melbourne.
Observations of Life in New Zealand (and sometimes beyond) through art, architecture, photography, travel, tourism, design, food, the quirky, the bizarre, the comedic - a few of the things I am passionate about. This is my world - a world of contemplations, observations and small adventures.

The Spaces Between - 18
It was 37-degrees the morning I rolled into Castlemaine, a couple of hours north of Melbourne. The sky was impossibly blue and made all the more so by its striking contrast to the many old brick buildings that give the town so much architectural character. It's a great little town but I find that searing heat hard to take. For others in this series click on Spaces Between in the label line below.

The Spaces Between - 17
I'm always on the lookout for those tantalising 'spaces between.'
Those long, thin, spaces between buildings that allude to things beyond.
This one came complete with a wonderful 'boxed set' of colourful reflections.

The Spaces Between - 16
Here's another in my Spaces Between series - a look into the spaces between buildings, the dark alleys, the visual slithers that hint at what lies beyond. For others in the series click on Spaces Between in the tag line below

The Spaces Between - 15
It's been a while since I brought you one of my Spaces Between series - so here's one I snapped yesterday looking west from Manchester Street. It has the bonus of including one of my other favourite things: cranes. Click on Spaces Between in the below label line if you want to see other architectural spaces in this series.

The Spaces Between - 10
I am always drawn to long thin spaces for reasons I cannot explain. I felt very drawn to this one at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Christchurch yesterday – a pale shaft of sunlight just catching the enormous columns that sheltered a side door.

The Spaces Between - 9
I was very taken with this aerial feature above the main shopping mall in Brisbane. I have no idea what it is, or what it is for - or whether or not it serves any practical function - but I loved the way the sunlight played upon it, casting fabulous shadows along the pavement below.

The Spaces Between 8
My fascination with the long, narrow spaces between buildings continues. I love the mix of textures here - the red brick contrasted with red and green corrugated iron and a rough little stone pathway - and the little bunch of (barely visible) red geraniums at the end.

Coffee Break
I go to Joe's Garage to work regularly. I like the slightly manic resemblance this cafe has to a hyperactive family living room - all noise, clatter, laughter, distraction and toys. Yes, toys. Old Tonka Toys take centre stage here - in posters, decoration and a large toy box for kids to rummage in. I lay out my writing notes and I slip into 'the spaces between' noise and comraderie, where I can think. My writing is easily formed there. This morning I caught this old Tonka 'driving' across the window sill beside me against a backdrop of Kenton Chambers across the street. www.joes.co.nz Sunday, February 24, 2008
