The View From Above

Image Supplied by SkyWalk, Auckland
How many times have I been back here - to Auckland's SKYTOWER?
It's like some perverse self-punishment (I have a fear of heights)
But also, it's all about the view. And yes, those are people in orange suits, walking around the very narrow edge of the tower.... that's the thrill that Skly Walk gives you - if you're brave enough that is. www.skywalk.co.nz

Auckland From Above

Image Courtesy of Sky Walk, Auckland I love this photograph - one of the many spectacular views given to me to use by the team at Auckland's SKY WALK, that crazy adventure that sees the brave and the courageous walking around the rim of SKYTOWER. Click on Sky Walk in the label line below and you'll find a whole lot more. Much less terrifying than actually being there I can assure you! www.skywalk.co.nz

A Walk to Remember

Image Courtesy Sky Walk, Auckland Call me a coward if you will, but there is no way you will ever convince me that this is a sensible and fun thing to do! Walking around the rim of Auckland's SKYTOWER is not for people like me who have a fear of heights. I appreciate the views though and I have been brave enough to go up to the viewing deck. But not for me a teeter around a narrow strip of steel attached to a thin safety harness! But it does make for some spectacular photographs. www.skywalk.co.nz

Living Life on the Edge!

Images courtesy SkyWalk, Auckland Am I the only person who thinks this is totally crazy?
It's possible my fear of heights may be colouring my judgement but from where I'm sitting, this just looks like showing off! I hasten to add I have nothing against SkyWalk. I have huge admiration for a company that can encourage people to part with hard-earned cash so they walk around Sky Tower's 1.2 metre wide ring with no handrails 192 metres in the air. I just wish I'd thought of the idea. I was given the opportunity to do this 'walk' when I was in Auckland recently - for free. "It's never going to happen," I told them, thanking them kindly for their generous offer. But I did go up to the viewing deck to watch a surprising number of people willing to hang off a cord and walk the perimeter. I found the glass-faced lift - complete with a glass box in the floor looking directly down into the lift mechanics -challenge enough. That will do me. I'll leave dare-devil antics like this to those who really do want to 'live on the edge.' And if walking around the perimeter isn't thrill enough, you can of course jump off - but Sky Jump is another story for another time. www.skywalk.co.nz www.skyjump.co.nz

Looking Up

Auckland. April 2009. Ajr
I think I became a little obsessed with photographing Skytower! I never realised I came away from Auckland with so many photos of it - one for almost every climatic variation.....which is perhaps is not something I should publicly confess to. www.skytower.co.nz

Leaping From High Places

SkyWalker April 2009 Ajr Sky Jumper determined not to look down. April 2009 Ajr And just to prove that I DID go to the top of SKYTOWER today - despite my fear of heights - here's a couple of shotsI took of people MUCH keener than me. Keep in mind that SKY TOWER is 328 m (1,076 ft)tall and it has a glass-faced lift with a glass panel in the floor. Suffice to say I was quietly freaking out long before I ever got to the top observation deck. www.skytower.co.nz

Bright Lights, Big City

Auckland and the Sky Tower at Sunset. Image Supplied by Tourism Auckland 2007
Dare I confess to the fact that the bright lights of the big city are taking it out of me?
I feel like I've flown to Jamaica and back!
That's the lot of a travel guide writer - early starts, late nights, rushing about like a headless chicken, eating too much, not sleeping enough, writing long hours and generally fighting back exhaustion. Call that glamorous do you?

Sunset Over the City

Auckland Harbour Bridge and Sky Tower. Image Supplied by Tourism Auckland 2007.
I'm keeping away from the Harbour Bridge for now. For reasons I can't fully explain, I've never really been a fan of the North Shore. But I'll have to cross the bridge in a few days time when I head up to the Far North. Now THAT I am looking forward to.

1 - 2 - 3 - JUMP!

Auckland View from SkyJump. Image Courtesy Tourism Auckland 2007.
You'd need to be a whole lot braver than me to think about the view when you're about to leap 192 metres (630-ft) in a controlled free-fall from Auckland's Sky Tower! I admire the person who stuck around to take the photograph! But if you're an adrenalin freak, this 'high-flying' activity will be just the ticket for you. www.skyjump.co.nz www.aucklandnz.com
