Associations - Colour

I physically file my digital images by subject and/or location. But in my head they seem to group themselves according to colour.
If I see these shots of the boat sheds on Lake Tarawera, near Rotorua, I immediately think of the glass bowl I photographed at Heritage Hotel's City Life in Auckland, or perhaps a summer dress suspended in a fashion store. I like the randomness of that. It makes every day a rich visual soup.

The Architecture of Construction

I photographed this little shed on the construction site of the new council buildings in Christchurch, just across the road from Christchurch Art Gallery, in Worcester Street. It's a classic example of one of those unexpected and arresting compositions of colour and form that most people walk past every day and never see. I am always excited by construction sites - there's so much happening, such a tangle of machinery and materials, shadows and reflections. I was drawn to this simple, 'blocky' little building by its unassuming proportions and the striking blue-orange contrast of paint and sky. And of course.....the crane ...below.....

Bus Stop

Christchurch. July 2009 Ajr
Walking down Colombo Street the other day, I was distracted by a bright burst of colour out of the corner of my eye - the waiting area at the Christchurch Bus Exchange. I don't know how I could have missed it on previous walk-bys. Maybe the doors were shut then? Once spotted, twice snapped!

Spoiled for Choice

Lyttelton. Sept.2008. Ajr
I wonder what inspired this little architectural display?
A fine creative burst?
Massive indecision?
A hangover?

White Mall

Here's another in my 'Coloured Mall' series.
A little photographic exercise to prove that not everything about shopping malls is ugly.

Yellow Mall

Here’s another of my ‘Coloured Malls’ – photographed in response to a recent discussion about the ugliness of shopping malls. I defended them – suggesting that there are ‘little moments of beauty’ everywhere if you look, even in a crowded shopping mall – and then felt bound to prove my point.

Red Mall

May 2008. Ajr
I found myself having a discussion about the ugliness of shopping malls recently. I defended them – suggesting that there are ‘little moments of beauty’ everywhere if you look – even in a crowded shopping mall. Yesterday, armed with a camera and far too much spare time, I set out to prove my point - that even in retail madness there is visual beauty. And so begins a series of ‘Coloured Malls.'
