A Christchurch Autumn

Autumn is one of my favourite seasons in Christchurch and just a few weeks into it, I already have more photographs of autumn leaves than is probably healthy. These are two I took with my new Nikon DSLR - a new toy that I am especially pleased with. It has the added bonus of being able to make even the weeds in my garden look good - a camera feature that should be compulsory across all brands.

Autumn Wine

Arisan Wines, Oratia, West Auckland. April 2009. Ajr
The vines were looking almost-bridal at Artisan Wines at Oratia in West Auckland this morning - gorgeous in the soft, grey morning light. www.artisanwines.co.nz

Late 'Bloomer'

Christchurch. June 2008. Ajr
This is one tree that refuses to acknowledge the arrival of winter.
It's still busy dropping its autumn leaves.

An Apple a Day

Autumn Crab Apples. May 2008. Ajr.
I stopped in at Under the Red Verandah for coffee on Sunday. This is a terrific café in an old two-storied house near Linwood. They have a fabulous crab apple tree in the garden and they’ve used the rosy little fruits as decorative elements inside. I couldn’t go passed this crab apple window display without taking a quick photograph. www.utrv.co.nz

Vineyard Autumn

Autumn 2007, Queenstown. Ajr
In the mood of our everlasting autumn, here's a quick glimpse at the vines at GVW - Gibbston Valley Wines, one of the most visited wineries in Australasia, near Queenstown. It's pinot noir, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and Riesling are all award winners. They also have a fabulous wine cave that was blasted out of the rocky cliffs behind the winery. www.gvwines.com

Autumn Cemetery

Cemetery, Christchurch. May 2008. Ajr
I love the contrast in this scene – the solid, sombre orderliness of the grave stones and the colourful, fluttering dishevelment of the autumn cherry trees. At the risk of sounding intensely morbid, I can spend hours in cemeteries. I find them deeply contemplative places filled with unspoken histories and poignant comments on life and death. And like many writers, photographers, artists, I find a wealth of inspiration in their ‘quiet solitude.’

An Everlasting Autumn

Harewood, Christchurch. May 2008. Ajr
Autumn seems to be going on forever this year.
Mellow sunny days, blue skies, golden foliage.
We like it all.

Autumn in the South

Arrowtown. 2007. Ajr
Every autumn the South Island town of Arrowtown, near Queenstown is ablaze with colour. Its thousands of deciduous trees must be some of the most photographed in the world. I took this shot last when I was doing my Frommers NZ travel guide research.

Autumn Vineyards

Waipara Wine Region, North Canterbury, NZ. 2007. Ajr
It may be cold here now but it's still pretty. Take this colourful scene for instance - the Waipara Wine Region, forty minutes north of Christchurch, where over 80 vineyards are casting a golden-red glow across the beautiful rolling landscape.

Autumn Gold

Canterbury University, Ilam, Christchurch. April 2008. Ajr
Christchurch is now dressed in its usual glorious autumn foliage. I took this shot yesterday afternoon at Canterbury University, where maples, elms, cherries, willows and other deciduous species have created a beautiful golden carpet.

Northern Autumn

Auckland, 2007. Ajr

The first flush of autumn red is creeping across the façade of one of my favourite inner city Auckland buildings – this gorgeous corner property near Albert Park.
