I spent this morning roaming around Westfield Riccarton – Christchurch’s biggest shopping mall - while I waited for computer repairs and I was reminded again of the rampant consumerism that rules modern life. It’s not about plain old shopping anymore; it’s all about lifestyle by association. You only have to look at the giant posters on the outside of the mall complex to see that. What I want to know is, when did we all become so gullible as to believe a ‘purchased lifestyle’ would solve all our problems and make us instantly happy?
